The best copywriters say to write like you talk.
Here’s why:
Conversational copy helps you connect with your readers on an emotional level. Like a salesperson would face-to-face.
And this connection leads to trust… Which makes “selling” to them effortless – without using sleazy “persuasion” that no one likes to do.
To help you put this into practice, I jotted down an easy, 3-step way to write like you talk:
How to write copy like you talk – in 3 easy steps:
• Step 1: Record a voice memo of you explaining something. (Pretend you’re leaving a voicemail to a friend.)
• Step 2: Transcribe the audio file into written text. (Google “transcribe audio to text” and you’ll find a bunch of services and apps that do this.)
• Step 3: Lightly edit the transcribed text, and publish it. As a social media post. Or an article. Or, of course, an email.
Whatever the medium is – this method works to pump out conversational copy fast.
There you have it. It’s hard to get more conversational than literally transcribing a conversation! 🗣️
And if you found this quick tip helpful, you’ll love my mini-course, The Simplest Email Marketing Crash-Course Ever Written.
Like the very post you’re reading, the course is:
- Bite-sized (tons of email copywriting lessons jam-packed into a PDF that you can consume in one sitting)
- Tactical (stop agonizing over the blinking cursor – steal my email framework and uncover everything that you need to know to start sending emails that convert TODAY)
- Simple (learn how to write short, 300-word emails that you can pump out in 20mins or less … my methodology works even if you don’t consider yourself a good writer)
Here’s what one of my students, Dom V from Chicago, said about the course:
“Great resource for email marketing that not only gives actionable ideas but also explains the underlying concepts.”
(Oh, and the program goes for less than a round of pints.)
